The Importance of Breast Cancer Awareness in the US Workplace
What do you feel when you see those pink ribbons?
Well, it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this is the time for employers to seek organizational benefits and to create early detection and wellness programs.
Breast cancer is one of the most fatal types of cancer. This frequently affects women, but it can also happen to men. In the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, thousands of men and women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually. The United States loses 500 men and 42,000 women to breast cancer annually. Even at work, this is something to look out for because this will be an invasive illness with 297,790 new cases in 2023 that might affect any workplace if it is not taken care of firsthand.
Employers have a unique opportunity to support their employees in taking charge of their health by (1) providing information to their employees; (2) offering resources; (3) encouraging regular breast cancer screenings like mammograms; (4) planning awareness events as a platform for employees to learn more about prevention, screening, and support services; and (5) partnering with a healthcare provider for insurance benefits and discounts.
All of these will help the business grow and benefit both employers and employees by strengthening it and contributing to a healthier workforce, lower healthcare costs, higher employee engagement, and a stronger company.
